Term 3
FESTIVAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE ... What a treat!
Our students performed at Festival Theatre on Thursday 11 September. It will be a night to remember for the students involved as they performed in front of a full house. Our soloists, Mim Harding and Jessica Johns were sensational with very strong and confident performances. Our students were a pleasure to listen to and to be with, as their behaviour was exemplary. Well done to the Choir and to Mrs Woodlands and Mrs Lake.
MATHS WEEK "TALLY UP THE FUN!"
The focus for Maths Week was around making and creating tallies of numbers to reflect the Chance and Data strand in Maths. Our students played chance and data games and we recorded our results so that we could feed into a big event Australia wide. Classes had heaps of fun trying to land a coin on a specially designed target.
Other classes conducted Maths Trails around the school where they looked at everyday items and examined the Maths associated in and around those items. Children made discoveries like the soccer goals are wider than the footy goals, the pattern on the basketball court fence was the same as the boundary fence and a range of other very important maths facts.
Our "Family Challenges" have really taken off with some very complicated Maths Formulas coming back in last week. It is great to see families getting involved in our challenges each fortnight.
Our thanks are extended to Mrs Rowe for all of her work in the lead up and during the Maths Week. A small group of students supported Mrs Rowe during Maths Week by holding Maths Games and Activities during lunch times last week. the students researched, planned and organised the games.
BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS
Our focus was on the Book Week theme of Fuel Your Mind and students were engaged in a number of activities that gave them a chance to think a little deeper about things. On Friday 22 August, students toured the school looking at the Decorated Doors that other classes had made. Students had to guess the book that the door had been decorated around and also collect a piece of a puzzle that would enable them to solve a problem. The doors were very colourful with a great deal of thought and effort in each one.
The school also hosted a BOOK FAIR across the week with many parents and students visiting to look at good quality books available at reasonable prices. The final sales figures are not available yet but the volume of people visiting the display would indicate that it was well worthwhile.
A number of classes also visited the Charles Sturt Library at Henley Beach. The staff there took each class through some Book Week activities that were aimed at stretching the children's thinking. It was terrific to work with other local community members to celebrate Australia wide activities.
OLYMPICS AT LUNCHTIME
For the two weeks of the Olympics we held "Have a go Olympics" at Lunchtime. Students from different year levels were able to have a go at a few or a lot of different activities based on Olympic events. The older students provided the activities for younger ones to be involved in. The Olympic Days were Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Healthy Lunch Box program continues this week. The program started on Friday 1/8 with the first lunch box check following a launch on Thursday. The program will run for 4 weeks with students who achieve 15 stickers across the possible 20 days, getting a special sample bag of healthy items. Last week this week.
Assistant Principals named.
The Assistant Principal will be Ms Anne Rowe in Term 3 and Mr Peter Hutton in Term 4. Congratulations to both staff members and as this is an internal position until the end of the year, there will be a reshuffle to their respective classes.
FULHAM NORTH WINS $500 WORTH OF SPORTING EQUIPMENT
At the Assembly on Thursday 24 July, Mr Ian Andrews, the State Manager of the Commonwealth Bank, presented Brittany Cavey with $500 worth of sports equipment. Brittany started a new account with school banking during a special period directly after the Police Tattoo early last term. Her name was selected from all of the new accounts and Fulham North Primary got the benefit. She was able to be considered because our school attended the Police Tattoo and the Commonwealth Bank were the major sponsors of the Police Tattoo.
ROAD SAFETY IS THE FOCUS
During the first week back in Term 3, our school focus was on Road Safety and in particular, pedestrian safety. At our Assembly on 24 July, we had a special guest Police Officer who spoke about being safe when walking on or near roads and about wearing your helmets when on a bike and on skateboards.
National Schools Tree Planting Day 25 July Bunnings Sponsorship
On Friday 25 July, Bunnings Hardware Store supported the school by coming along and providing us with a number of native shrubs and grasses to plant around the new amphitheatre area. This was part of Bunnings commitment to community projects and 24 of our students really got involved in the hands on planting. We are very grateful to Bunnings for their sponsorship and support with developing our school grounds.
HEALTHY LUNCH BOX PROGRAM LAUNCH
Over four weeks, starting 1 August, the students will participate in a daily check of lunch boxes to see if they have packed a "Healthy Lunch Box" following lunch ideas sent home by our Well Being Committee. Each day a healthy lunch box is produced, students earn a sticker, working towards a healthy sample bag that can be taken home and shared. To achieve the sample bag, students must have 15 stickers from a possible 20 over the four weeks. The official launch was conducted with support from an Adelaide 36's Basketball team player, Jacob Holmes. The aims of the program are to achieve a good understanding of what goes in your lunchbox and how healthy it is as well as getting children involved in making food choices for their own lunches. |
